Annual carnival kicks off in Jessup

JESSUP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The celebratory kick-off of festivities begins at the Jessup Hose Company’s annual carnival on Wednesday night.

Lights are flashing on the ground of Jessup Hose Company No. 2, but it’s not for an emergency, it’s to kick off its annual carnival.

Dozens of rides await crowds of people attending the five-day event, and you can’t forget about the delicious food like porchetta and halushki.

All the money raised goes toward helping the company pay for gear and equipment, like a fire jacket that costs nearly $3,400. Equipment that company president Bill Muchal says is urgently needed.

“We got vehicles here that are older, we got to buy a new ambulance, we’re going to try and buy another truck because some of the trucks are old so we’re trying to get that squared away.”

Working alongside the St. Ubaldo society, tons of prep goes into their own festivities, like the Running of the Saints race.

The carnival opens Wednesday at 6 p.m. and runs through Monday.
