SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A college in Scranton announced it is merging with a college in Philadelphia.

Lackawanna College announced Wednesday it’s joining forces with Peirce College.

Lackawanna officials say the merger better positions both schools to succeed.

The merger will hope to make education more accessible and affordable while helping students be better prepared to enter the workforce.

Officials say until the merger is finalized, both colleges will operate as two separate schools and hope to have plans finished by 2025.

The nearly 160-year-old Peirce College opened in Philadelphia in 1865 to educate Union Soldiers returning from the Civil War.
