Attorney convicted in ‘Kids for Cash’ scheme pleads guilty to tax evasion

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A former Luzerne County Attorney who was convicted in the infamous Kids for Cash scheme in Luzerne County has pleaded guilty to tax evasion.

Robert Powell pleaded guilty to tax evasion for legal fees he earned while with the Powell Law Group.

According to the US Department of Justice, Powell failed to file personal income tax returns for over a decade.

Powell’s license to practice law was suspended in 2009 and he was subsequently disbarred in 2015.

In the plea agreement filed with the court, Powell agreed to pay full restitution to the IRS.

He was released on an unsecured bond while awaiting his sentencing.
