WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Many families in our area are getting ready to send their kids back to school. An elementary school in Luzerne County helped make the process a little easier for those in need.

Students aren’t back to school yet at Kistler Elementary, but the gymnasium was full of activity.

The school partnered with Luzerne County Children, Youth, and Families to host a “Back 2 School Bash.”

“A lot of the things that were looked upon were getting haircuts, and free haircuts were the greatest thing for our kids both boys and girls, the girls could get their nails painted, even some of the parents got their nails painted,” stated Melinda Heffron, assistant principal at Kistler Elementary.

Perla Sandoval and her kids came to the event.

It’s where local hairdressers and barbers donated time during their day off to provide free haircuts to both kids and adults, helping them look and feel their best for the new school year.

“It’s a lot of help, especially like for parents like me that have a lot of kids, it’s a lot of help, the food is great, the supplies are great, the haircuts are great, the nails I love them too,” expressed Sandoval.

“It was fun, and I was happy that I got waves, and this is my first time getting waves,” said Marte Sandoval.

Thanks to the generosity of the community, everything at the event was free. From bags of school supplies to clothing, and even a tasty lunch, families were treated to a fun day.

“I think the kids are going to feel wonderful. New haircut, a picture, some of our families, they are not able to get school pictures, they are having a great time,” explained Tammy Danna from the Luzerne County Children, Youth, and Families.

Families also got to take home hygiene items from the nurse’s pantry program. Learn more about the program on the United Way of Wyoming Valey website .
