PALMERTON, CARBON COUNTY  (WBRE/WYOU) — A new festival is making its way to a resort in the Poconos this weekend.

The art of making pierogi, everyone has their own technique.

But first, you have to start with the dough.

Cook Emily Clinebell with Blue Mountain in Palmerton shows us the perfect way to pinch a pierogi ahead of the resort’s first-of-its-kind pierogies and pints festival.

“You roll it out, you cut it up into a circle with a little cookie cutter that we use, you’ll fill it. You have to fold it into a half moon, pinch it, make sure none of the filling is falling out, and you almost want to crimp it.”

Whether it’s boiled, sauteed, or fried; festival goers get to taste and judge creative, traditional and dessert pierogies. Like pumpkin, caramel, and apple pie.

“We were looking for a new, creative festival idea and I mean what else is so well known in this region than pierogies and what a delicious festival to have,” says Ashley Seier.

“It’s universal. No matter what you put in it, what you put on top of it, no matter who you’re serving it to. Whether it’s your first time having one, whether it’s your hundredth time having one, they all have a story to tell,” says John Cooke.

But tasting isn’t the only thing on the menu.

“Bobbing for pierogies. There will be no boiling water, but it is going to be a lot of fun. These pierogies will float on the surface of the water but they’re slippery,” says Mo Taylor.

Happening on Saturday and Sunday, a beer garden and craft vendors will accompany the sweet treat of pierogies, a love that runs deep in the commonwealth.

“Anybody born and raised in pennsylvania knows that pierogies are a way of life really,” says Clinebell.

The pierogies and pints festival at Blue Mountain runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
