KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), this summer season has been record-breaking for travel and is estimated to continue this upcoming Labor Day weekend.

28/22 News stopped by one auto shop in Luzerne County for tips on how to make sure your vehicle is ready to hit the road this weekend.

Labor Day is just around the corner and millions of Americans are preparing to travel for the holiday.

“You don’t want to have any headaches so if you can be proactive and check that box and eliminate any potential problems, bring your car in beforehand,” stated Thomas Tranguch, owner of T&F Tire Supply.

We visited T&F Tire Supply in Kingston where they’re seeing an increase in customers ahead of the weekend. Tranguch says everyone taking a road trip should check their vehicle ahead of time.

“Have someone check your belts and hoses. If a belt fails or a hose fails, you’re going to be stuck, you’re going to be stuck trying to get service instead of trying to enjoy your vacation.”

Ways you can check your vehicle, such as oil is grabbing the dipstick under the hood, wiping away the oil to find the indicator, and placing it back.

For tires, using the penny test.

“You’ll take a penny, Lincoln’s head facing downward and put it in the tread. If the head is visible, it’s time to replace your tires,” explained Tranguch.

    Or testing out your headlights.

In addition to checking your headlights, make sure your blinkers and brake lights are also working for your safety and the safety of drivers around you.

Simple fixes that could be prevented if you’re taking the extra precaution.

“You do have some time, but you should be doing this in case something needs to be fixed or repaired. Take it off your list, get the car into a shop, or check it yourself and make sure that you’re going to have a trouble-free vacation. Spend the last week of summer having fun,” added Tranguch.

AAA urges drivers to leave for their destination on Thursday or Friday morning to try and avoid congested afternoon and evening hours.
