SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Changes are coming to the high school dress code for the Scranton School District for the approaching school year.

After a meeting Monday night and hearing from high school students themselves, the district has updated the guidelines to offer more flexibility while maintaining a focus on appropriate attire

Students can now wear any color or pattern, including spirit wear, and are no longer restricted to solid colors.

Students may also wear crew-neck t-shirts, sweatshirts without hoods, and polo shirts in any color or pattern, but hooded sweatshirts are not allowed and are considered to be outer garments.

Road restrictions set for La Festa Italiana

For pants, any color is allowed in a khaki material dresses, skirts, and athletic shorts are also permitted as long as they meet the fingertip length rule. Jeans, sweatpants, leggings, and yoga pants are still not allowed all shoes must have a backing or strap behind the heels, with toes fully enclosed

“We did vote on it last night, the kids from West and Scranton High came, they spoke very professionally, eloquently and they explained to us why a dress code is hindering their ability to express themselves and it’s only for the high school right now I mean this is not a district-wide policy, this is high school and again I don’t want to say test but yeah maybe,” explained Ty Holmes the President Scranton School Board.

Students are not allowed to wear any clothing with inappropriate wording or images, gang-affiliated attire, and headgear like hats and sunglasses.

Backpacks still must be clear or mesh, and water bottles must be clear plastic
