Erie, PA ( WJET/WFXP )– A scary scene unfolded on upper Peach Street Monday after a driverless car crashed into a nearby structure.

Police were called to the Wendy’s in the 5900 block of Peach Street after an SUV crashed into a structure near the building, but when employees went out to check out what happened, nobody was in the vehicle.

According to a witness, the occupants of a Subaru jumped out of the car thinking it was in park near the intersection of Interchange Road and Peach Street after the car started smoking.

When the occupants jumped out, the car was still in gear heading north on Peach Street against the flow of traffic with the driver and passenger doors open requiring at least two cars to get out of the way and knocking down two signs at the crosswalk.

Still moving, the car was redirected across each side of Peach Street before crashing into the wall of the dumpster area of the nearby Wendy’s.
