SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Scranton Fire Department is rallying behind one of its own. Lieutenant Kelly Hopkins is battling stage four esophageal cancer.

He talked with 28/22 News about how humble he is with the amount of support he has from his second family.

“When a brother in the fire department needs help, it’s almost automatic that we band together,” said Scranton Fire Department Lieutenant Tim O’Connor.

Scranton Firefighter Lieutenant Kelly Hopkins is fighting his biggest fire yet.

Lieutenant Hopkins joined the fire department in 1986. After nearly 40 years, the 63-year-old is battling stage four esophageal cancer.

“I’m doing good, I really am doing good. Just scared, I’m running scared but that’s normal,” Hopkins said.

Diagnosed in May, Hopkins has since been undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

“I am going to beat this, the only thing chemo is doing to me is making me tired and from being a Firefighter, you gotta get your naps in,” Hopkins added.

To support Hopkins and his family during this fight, Scranton’s Fire Union and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 60 have planned a big bash that’s coming up this weekend.

“We immediately came up with the plan to throw a benefit to lift his spirits and raise awareness,” O’Connor explained.

“I was shocked when I found out about it, the benefit, and then the billboard on I-81,” Hopkins stated.

On Sunday evening, the community will rally around Hoppy at Montage Resort with food and drinks, live music, and dozens of raffle baskets.

Hopkins tells 28/22 News the show of support is the best medicine he can ask for.

“What a great piece of medicine, the love and the support that I’m getting,” Hopkins continued.

Hopkins says he misses the job and his second family.

“He’s a great fireman, he’s a leader in and outside the firehouse,” said O’Connor.

“I didn’t realize there was so much stuff behind everything, so, and I love him to death, 20-year friendship, and it’s going to go on for 20 more,” Hopkins added.

The benefit is on Sunday, September 15, at Montage Mountain Resort.
