SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Monday marks one year since the devastating flooding last September in NEPA.

Mayor Paige Cognetti and other representatives of the city of Scranton took a moment to reflect and acknowledge the historic events on September 9, 2023 .

Flash flooding damaged neighborhoods in Scranton and other parts of the area costing some $10,000,000 in damages within city limits.

Mayor Cognetti spoke about the continuous efforts the city is making to prepare for the next event.

“We’ll continue to fight for every dollar we get for this storm and prepare ourselves to be able to do that when the next one hits,” Mayor Cognetti explained.

“Like the Mayor says, we can never predict it, but I can tell you there’s going to be another one. None of us know when, but the city is much more prepared today than we were even yesterday,” said Scranton Fire Department Chief John Judge.

The city continues to seek $2,700,000 in funding to acquire and demolish 18 substantially damaged homes and three vacant lots.

Meanwhile, stormwater projects across the electric city remain ongoing.
