YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — The Commissioner of York Police spoke at a ceremony at the Christian School of York today honoring and remembering those who lost and sacrificed their lives on 9/11.

York Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow spoke to other York County first responders, police, firefighters, students, and local political leaders about the attacks’ impact. September 11, sometimes referred to as “Patriot Day,” is particularly poignant for first responders.

“I almost can’t communicate what it meant to not know if I was going to go home and hug my kid that night because of a job,” Commissioner Muldrow said. “It’s just as raw for me today as it was 23 years ago. It’s just as sobering because it was such an eye-opening moment.”

Many students who attended the event were not alive or were too young to experience the impact 9/11 had on the American people, so this event aimed to educate young audiences.

“Our students may not understand because they weren’t alive when it took place how it does still impact them today,” said Andy Bell, the Superintendent of Christian School of York. “There are certain practices, certain security measures that are just in place that they take for granted. We’d like for our students to understand that it’s not just a sacrifice that those individual first responders make, but their families are also making.”

For many young people in America, 9/11 is a historical event rather than something to remember, so events like these are essential for ensuring the country never forgets.
