Man charged with attempting to defraud bank of over $194K

WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A 34-year-old man is facing charges after attempting to defraud a Luzerne County bank, according to the Wyoming Area Regional Police Department.

34-year-old Nolan Emory is being charged with felony counts of Forgery, Theft by Unlawful Taking, and Receiving Stolen Property among other charges.

Officials say that Emory went to M&T Bank in Wyoming on August 26, created an account under a false identity, and deposited $25 into the account.

On September 4, Emory went into the same bank and tried to deposit a check valued at $194,729.64, police say.

The information Emory allegedly provided to the bank under a false name was found to be the information of another person.

Wyoming Area Regional Police Department spoke with the actual person, who said they did not open an account with M&T bank, but were expecting a large check from the U.S. Department of Treasury but had not received it yet.

Emory stopped by the bank Friday morning to show proof of identification and financial proof, where he was arrested.

Police say it was found that Emory possessed a stolen driver’s license, debit card, Sapphire Preferred Bank Card, and a Social Security Card.

He is currently being held at Luzerne County Correctional Facility on $200,000 bail.
