FORTY-FORT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Girls with a passion for aviation got a hands-on experience Saturday to inspire them to soar high.

They gathered at the Wyoming Valley Airport for the fourth annual NEPA Girls in Aviation Day.

More than 60 girls participated in various learning stations including a state police helicopter, an air traffic control station, and a flight simulator.

The event aims to promote opportunities to girls who may be interested in one day pursuing a career in aviation and aeronautics.

28/22 News spoke to one girl who’s been coming to this event now for three years.

“What I really like is that I love to be in the air and do all the stuff,” said Grace Laspina.

“Aviation is predominately a male-dominated industry. Only about 6.8% of pilots are female at this time. So it’s really important that we have the girls here at the airport. We give them the exposure to aviation and maybe someday they consider it as a profession,” explained Molly Van Scoy the president of the NEPA Chapter of WIA.

Anyone who missed the registration deadline for this year’s Girls in Aviation Day is encouraged to come out next year.
