(WHTM) — A large sewage line was ruptured in Snyder County on Sunday, Sept. 22, causing raw sewage to flow into the Susquehanna River, according to Millersburg Upper Paxton Emergency Management Agency .

The agency says a 20-inch sewage line rupture near the East Snyder County Sewage Treatment Facility is spilling sewage into surrounding bodies of water and flowing into the Susquehanna River.

According to the agency, the ruptured line moves an average of two million gallons of sewage daily. The rupture’s effect on the surrounding environment is unclear at this time.

The Susquehanna River above the Hoover Island Boat Launch is the most affected area, the agency said.

The rupture began around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, and authorities are unsure when it will be repaired.

Snyder County residents and fishermen are encouraged to avoid the affected areas.
