Special needs playground launch party held in Dallas

DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A special needs playground project is in the works thanks to fundraising in Luzerne County.

The Rotary Club of Dallas and the Dallas Intermediate School have teamed up to raise money to build a boundless playground.

A launch party was held Thursday at the Apple Tree Terrace in Dallas to kick off fundraising efforts.

The sensory-inclusive playground would provide an outdoor play area and allow children of all abilities to interact in an environment that helps them build essential communication and social skills and would be the first playground of its kind in the Back Mountain.

“We use the term boundless playground it will go on the north end of our existing playground we’d like to put sensory items in there so our students so our students can get sensory input during recess and it will help their vestibular system and procreospective systems,” said Dallas Intermediate Principal Tom Traver.

The existing playground at the school has no equipment specifically designed for children with autism and other special needs.
