Open house showcasing artifacts draws crowds in Duryea

DURYEA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A free open house drew crowds Sunday afternoon in Luzerne County.

The Society of Pennsylvania Archaeology’s Frances Dorrance Chapter hosted an open house at their Reading and Northern Site in Duryea.

The event offered displays of various artifacts found on-site from Native American arrowheads to Revolutionary War-era lapel pins and coins.

Demonstrations of archaeological digs and tours of the dig sites were also shown.

Members of the chapter say this event serves as a reminder of the rich, natural history in our area.

“It’s rare in the valley that you have undisturbed areas. So if there is an undisturbed area that you know of. It’s worth saving,” said Frances Dorrance Chapter of the Society of Pennsylvania Archaeology Treasurer Ted Baird.

The Frances Dorrance Chapter hosts digs every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. except during the winter months.
