Woman sentanced to prison after 2022 death of baby

SULLIVAN COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Attorney General announced the sentencing of a mid-wife who was previously found guilty of involuntary manslaughter of a newborn.

On Tuesday, Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry announced 49-year-old Brigitte Meckes was sentenced to eight to 17 years in prison.

This comes after a jury convicted her in July of aggravated assault, involuntary manslaughter, and other related charges in the 2022 death of a baby.

Attorney General Henry goes on to say Sullivan County President Judge Russel Shurtleff ordered the sentence, stating Meckes hasn’t shown any remorse in contributing to the infant’s death.

This defendant had the means and time to simply pick up a phone and call for aid for a helpless baby who desperately needed it. That makes this case even more tragic — that the people who should have been helping, instead let the child die. The prosecution of this defendant, as well as the child’s parents, resulted in justice and accountability for the criminal conduct — but no sentence will ever undo the harm they caused.

The Attorney General’s Office previously presented evidence showing Meckes, Drew and Amy Hoenigke, the baby’s parents, knew the baby was in danger and didn’t call 911.

Drew and Amy previously pleaded guilty and were sentenced in June for the incident, according to the Attorney General.
