it cost too much to live around the lake the price is on homes and land are just too outrageous

it's not hidden. No one cares to look at the areas that aren't on the other side of the interstate they or ignore it to make themselves feel better, or they just dont have enough heart to care. I bet half of the people living there may work and probably live check to check and still struggling. This isn't anything new it's been there for years. Poverty is everywhere, but people act like it's not. what some do not realize the same way you hot that nice house and good job it can easily be lost due to unforeseen circumstances and then you will know about that lifestyle it's not always what the person chose it's just how live changing events got them there.
