PEMBROKE, N.C. (WBTW) — University of North Carolina at Pembroke students on Monday got an up close and personal look at jobs within the U.S. Department of State’s security branch during a career showcase.

In addition to an armored car and drone operated by the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, students had a chance to speak with 25 agents to learn more about internships, fellowships, scholarships and career opportunities.

“It actually was a great opportunity, because I got to talk to so many amazing people and they offered me amazing things, all the benefits of working at the State Department. So yeah, it was a really fun time,” UNC Pembroke junior Harry Lamichhane said.

Gentry Smith, the bureau’s assistant secretary, said events like Monday’s are important.

“We’re always excited when we engage, particularly on university campuses. And we hear that there is still a very strong interest in public service. We want to make sure that persons know about the opportunities that are available in the foreign service as well,” he said.

Agents visited several political science classes to guest lecture as part of the program.
