MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — It’s one of the world’s fastest growing sports, and Myrtle Beach is home to an elite venue for playing it.

The Splinter City disc golf course is a 7,500-foot, 18-hole complex just off Farrow Parkway near Market Common that draws hundreds of players every day.

“It’s because of where we’re at. We’re a destination town, so we get a lot of people coming here and there are disc golfers in that mix, so we get a lot of traffic solely because of where we’re at,” said Christopher Chapman, owner of Teddy Peddler Disc Golf Pro Shop.

Interest in disc golf has exploded since 2000, and the U.S. was the first country to exceed 10,000 courses, according to an industry report.

Chapman helped design the course, which opened in December 2020.

Greg Campbell and his son-in-law Corey Robinson are regulars there.

“Just playing it a couple of times, it’s just a different experience. It’s a challenge for sure,” Campbell said. “It’s not an easy sport, not as easy as people think it is,” Campbell said.

Splinter City gets its name from the former U.S. Air Force Base that occupied the property for decades.

Chapman said it’s accessible for beginners and experienced players alike.

“It’s got two sets of tees. It’s got a short set of blues that are very fun and scorable for a season player and good for new players,” he said. “And it’s got long tees that are a very good challenge.”
