FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) — A 27-year-old Effingham man was arrested Saturday afternoon after allegedly carjacking a vehicle and leading a Florence County deputy on a brief chase, police said.

Jacob Brown was charged with carjacking, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and failure to stop for a blue light, Florence police Capt. Stephen Starling said on Monday.

He was armed with a BB gun, according to authorities, when he stole a car that was later seen on surveillance camera. He then led authorities on a brief pursuit before crashing near Sumter Street and Ebenezer Road.

Brown refused to get out of the car and also was carrying a knife, police said. He was arrested after a short standoff and taken to an area hospital to be checked for injuries related to the crash.

Brown was being held without bond Monday at the Florence County Detention Center. No additional information was immediately available.
