NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — As stormy weather blew across the northern Grand Strand Monday, locals and visitors made the most of its heavy winds and rain.

News13 crews spent the day in North Myrtle Beach, where trees were blowing and trash cans tipped over.

Cherry Grove pier manager Edgar Stephens said heavy rains Monday morning brought concerns over King tides as water pushed up the shore.

“What happens is that it pushes the water up onto the beach and the runoff can’t escape and get back out into the ocean through the drainage systems, which causes everything to float back in here,” he said.

The pier was operating as usual Monday and didn’t sustain any damage.

Mark Purcell, who frequently visits the city from Virginia, said he’s never experienced winds and rain during his stays.

“I just turn my back to it and hope it doesn’t blow me into the ocean,” he said.

Purcell took advantage of the conditions, walking the less crowded beach searching for shark teeth and seashells.

“The waves have been amazing and then, the surge of the beach It’s just a whole different part. I’m usually out golfing, but I’m having a good time just doing this.” Purcell said, “It’s actually kind of different and fun. I would encourage everybody put their raincoat on and come on out”.
