NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Friday night’s football game between North Myrtle Beach and Marlboro County has been canceled.

North Myrtle Beach Athletic Director Tony Heilbronn said the decision was made out of “an abundance of caution” after this week’s decision by Marlboro County Schools to switch to e-learning on Thursday and Friday in the wake of recent violence and school threats.

Marlboro County School officials said North Myrtle Beach “forfeited tonight’s football due to safety concerns raised by their administration.”

The game was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in North Myrtle Beach.

The FBI and state and local authorities are investigating recent incidents in Marlboro County that led to a student being shot, a large fight at the school and other social media threats.

Superintendent Helena Tillar called the incidents “alarming” in a news release on Thursday.

“We understand that these incidents have been alarming, and we want to be transparent about the steps we have taken to address them,” Tillar said, adding that district leaders have had meetings with representatives from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the FBI, Solicitor Will Rogers, the sheriff’s office Bennettsville police, McColl police and other local law enforcement agencies.
