HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Loris man who died Monday morning in a crash near Loris was driving a car that sped away after an Horry County police officer stopped to see if the occupants needed assistance, a report said.

Martin McFeely, 38, was killed when his 2008 Mercury sedan rolled over and hit a tree on Daisy Road near Tansy Road about 5 miles east of Loris. The crash happened at about 6:35 a.m.

According to an Horry County police report obtained by News13 on Tuesday, the officer saw the car at 6:27 a.m. at a stop sign near Red Bluff and Heritage roads with its right rear door open and its hazard lights on. When the officer approached the car, the report said it “took off at a high rate of speed.”

The vehicle then crashed after a short pursuit. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Monday that McFeely was the only person in the car. However, the Horry County police report indicated a second suspect was in the car but provided no additional information.

No additional information was immediately available. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Horry County Fire Rescue were also at the scene where the car crashed.
