Embattled North Myrtle Beach city manager requests public hearing after council votes to remove him

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Embattled North Myrtle Beach City Manager Mike Mahaney has requested a public hearing after council voted to remove him from his position last week.

North Myrtle Beach received a written notice on Tuesday from Mahaney about his request for a public hearing. A date for that hearing is to be determined.

A document obtained from the Sept. 19 meeting says the council voted to remove Mahaney after he “did not pursue the hiring of a Grants Coordinator despite being urged to do so by multiple members of City Council on or about February 21, 2024 and February 22, 2024.”

The council approved a resolution to remove Mahaney, as well as another to place him on administrative leave. The decision was made in a 5-2 vote, with councilmembers Fred Coyne and Nicole Fontana voting against it.

Mahaney was under investigation for assault in May 2022, but the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division declined to pursue charges against him in November of that year. He became city manager in 2010.
