LAKE CITY, S.C. (WBTW) — The South Carolina Department of Transportation has granted Lake City $176,000 for the development of a safety action plan for the community, a news release said.

Lake City’s application was one of 12 South Carolina projects selected for funding from the Safe Streets and Roads for All grants.

“The city’s grant is a Planning and Demonstration Grant will help us develop a new comprehensive safety action plan that addresses our specific issues,” Mayor Yamekia Robinson said. “Once we get the plan in place, we will begin to implement it.”

Lake City was also recently given a Community Block Development Grant that helped remove more than a dozen run down buildings from the city.

“The city has been very blessed with multiple grant awards recently,” said William A. Hall, city administrator. “City staff are currently working on closing out about $20 million worth of grant projects.”

A news release said that both grants are part of the bipartisan infrastructure law that supports DOT’s national roadway safety strategy and its goal of zero roadway deaths.

“We hope to develop the plan in conjunction with other grants we have and be able to beautify some of our streets and communities in addition to making them safe,” Hall said. “We have a sidewalk grant that we’re working with and are on the cusp of about $25 million in more grants going forward that we hope will help us build for tomorrow.”

To develop the new comprehensive safety action plan, city officials will reach out for input from the community in the coming months. For more information, click here .
