LAURINBURG, N.C. (WBTW) — A 44-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed while trying to cross Interstate 74 in Laurinburg on Wednesday morning, police said.

Damon Mason Giles of Laurinburg died as a result, according to police. He was hit by a 2017 Nissan Murano while trying to cross westbound lanes of I-74. Police said he was wearing dark clothing and was hit in an unlit area.

Officers responded at about 6 a.m. to I-74 near Highway 401, police said. When they arrived, they found Giles unresponsive and lying in the road. Scotland County EMS pronounced him dead.

Officers also found the Nissan Murano with heavy damage to the front bumper, hood and windshield, police said. The driver was not injured.
