South Carolina official urges caution for those looking to aid Helene victims

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — As the scope of Hurricane Helene’s damage across the southeast becomes clearer, so too does the need for supplies to help those that have lost their homes and belongings.

Secretary of State Mark Hammond on Wednesday had a message for those looking to give — especially with their money.

“We’re a small state, but we have a big heart,” he said. “I want your donation to go to those in need, so I want you to be vigilant. I want you to research these organizations.”

A 1994 law requires charities to register with Hammond’s office and file financial information, which is then published online to provide transparency to donors and other interested parties.

Donors can research charities by downloading the Give Smart SC app that includes annual financial reports.

Here are some steps people can take to safeguard themselves from scammers:

    • Limit contributions to charities that have a long track record of providing aid during natural disasters. Restrict donations to organizations with a history of transparency and accountability with infrastructure to deliver resources into devastated areas.
    • Don’t feel pressured to contribute right away. If a charity is asking for a donation and is legitimate, it will welcome the opportunity for questions about how a contribution will be used.
    • Protect yourself from identity theft. Never give out your Social Security number in response to a charitable solicitation, and only use credit cards to donate to reputable organizations.
    • Notify the Secretary of State’s Office if you have questions about a charity.
