HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — After nearly 40 years in law enforcement, Horry County Police Chief Joseph Hill’s last day on the job is Friday.

News13 sat down with Hill to talk about his eight years serving as the head of the Horry County Police Department.

Under his leadership, HCPD hired 50 new officers, evolved with changes in technology with the use of drones, and also has implemented better training for officers. Hill talked about what led to his decision to retire.

“Why now? Lots of things, lot of personal issues have occurred,” Hill told News13 anchor Trish Williford. “And so, I had to reevaluate the future for me and my family. So, that future is me enjoying the rest of my life and knowing that this agency is being left in great hands.”

Hill said he looks forward to volunteering in the community, spending time with his family and going fishing. Newly-appointed Police Chief Kris Leonhardt was sworn-in on Thursday.
