MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — What originated in Hawaii has become a newfound favorite.

After trying it themselves, Tony and Gisele Sanders fell in love with the mochi donuts. They then decided to bring this type of food to the Grand Strand and opened Mochinut in May.

“We just kind of thought it was something new, something different,” co-owner Tony Sanders said. “It’s not your typical donut.”

If you haven’t heard of this before, you may be wondering what Mochinut is. Mochi donuts are a combination of American doughnuts and Japanese mochi, made with rice flour which makes them stretchy and chewy.

What makes them so unique? The shape and the texture.

“Our dough was made from a rice, glutinous flour, so it’s more crunchy on the outside and little chewy on the inside,” Tony said.

The donuts are all the same, but the toppings and designs are what makes them stand out from the rest. With 25 toppings and flavors, you’re guaranteed to find one you love.

They also offer Korean corn dogs, which are covered in the same mochi dough, coated with panko and deep fried.

“We offer original, a half and half, and the mozzarella,” Tony said. “Original is a full 100% hot dog inside, half and a half is half hotdog, half mozzarella, and then our other one’s like a mozzarella cheese stick, basically.”

What makes these stand out are the flavor options. You can choose anything from potato, crispy ramen, to even hot Cheetos! And to top it off, they have more than 10 different sauces — some even homemade, to dip your corn dogs in.

You can’t have all of these delicious treats without a drink. They have countless different flavored Boba teas to choose from, with, of course, the popping pearls.

“The thing about our product, is that it’s good any time of day,” Tony said. “You can have it in the morning, noon or evening.”

Tony said he loves being part of the Myrtle Beach community and wants everyone to enjoy their unique creations. So next time you’re craving a sweet treat, Mochinut has you covered.

“We want Myrtle Beach to know that, ‘Hey, we’re here. We’re part of you guys,” Tony said. “We’re here to support the community and provide a service that, you know, hopefully everybody enjoys.”

Mochinut is located on Seaboard Street in Myrtle Beach behind the Coastal Grand Mall.

They are open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
