DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A pair of W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center inmates are facing contraband charges after items including shanks, a cellphone and prescription drugs were discovered this week, authorities said.

Shane Rashard Brown, of Lamar, is facing one count of possession of contraband after a search of his cell on Sunday turned up a box of chocolate containing psylocibin, one half of a prescription-only pill, one and one half of a prescription-only pill, a mobile phone and two shanks.

On Monday, Jemeare Lorenzo Nero, of Columbia, was hit with the same charge after officials said he used an illegal cellphone to post a Snapchat video of himself smoking a cigarette in his cell.

“Just as with any other jail or prison throughout the state, there is a constant battle keeping contraband out of the facility,” David Young, chief deputy at the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, said in a Tuesday news release. “More often, there is usually a detention officer involved.”

In April, 39-year-old Kilenna Michelle Wright was charged with furnishing contraband and misconduct in office after allegedly using a deodorant container to conceal marijuana, tobacco and rolling papers, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said.

“There have been numerous detention officers arrested and charged over the last few years for bringing in contraband, as we do not condone this behavior,” Young said.

Security upgrades including new cameras and employee parking lot fencing have been installed to address the issue, Young said, adding that officials recently intercepted a package that was thrown over the perimeter before it could get inside.

“For someone to suggest or believe that the inmate are in control of a facility due to contraband is absurd,” Young said. “Inmates constantly scheme and try to find ways to get the contraband into the facility.”

Officials will analyze the cellphones, which could lead to additional charges once the data is processed.
