NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad’s 64th annual Fish Fry and Barbecue Fundraiser is Saturday at Ocean Drive Elementary School.

The rescue squad is one of the few volunteer organizations in South Carolina that helps Horry County Fire Rescue and North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue. The squad relies on community support.

Every October, the rescue squad cooks thousands of meals worth of fried fish and barbecue to raise money for the volunteer organization. Greg Richardson, the rescue squad’s boat captain, said the department expects to serve 2,000 meals on Saturday. However, it will keep serving food until it all runs out.

The event is an all-you-can-eat buffet with homemade hush puppies, pit-cooked barbecue, and a 110-year-old slaw recipe for just $15 per person. Golden fillets of deep-water fish, handmade creamy coleslaw, tea and lemonade are also on the menu.

You can take home leftovers, and there will even be a drive-thru where you will get a box with a little bit of everything. You do not even need to leave your car for some delicious fried fish and barbecue.

But people can enjoy more than just the food.

“The atmosphere, we’ll have some music playing,” Richardson said. “There’ll be some bake sales, some silent auction items. You can buy a supporter t-shirt from our t-shirt staff. Our explorers will be there selling cakes and desserts. So, it’s just a great, fun day to come out, and all proceeds go to support the North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad.”

The rescue squad has hosted the fundraiser at Ocean Drive Elementary School for years because it has a supportive staff, a big cafeteria to serve thousands of people and a big parking lot for the drive-thru.

Richardson said the squad is not tax-funded, and it is led by volunteers. He said the community’s support at fundraisers like this one allows the squad to keep giving back.

“Just this week, we went to a gentleman’s house. He’s under hospice care. He was getting a new hospital bed, a larger hospital bed than what he was currently in. There was nowhere for him to be while they switched the beds,” he said. “We took an ambulance crew up there. We put him on one of our stretchers. He was able to lay there on that stretcher in comfort while they switched out his hospital bed.”

The Fish Fry and Barbecue Fundraiser starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Ocean Drive Elementary School in North Myrtle Beach. You can get tickets online or at the door.
