NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club will host the “What a Difference a Mile Makes” walk on Saturday.

It’s the fourth year of the Domestic Violence Awareness Walk, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The walk to raise awareness and show support for survivors is 1.1 miles around the lake at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

The cost to walk is $20, and the money goes toward helping victims become survivors. Walkers are encouraged to wear purple, which is the color for domestic violence awareness.

The Woman’s Club works with the local police department, the Rape Crisis Center, the Family Justice Center and the Children’s Recovery Center to protect those affected by domestic abuse.

“All the monies that we raise go to help these victims,” chair Kim Allen said. “It could be that we transition a family and their pets into a home. We put them in a hotel. They may need a vehicle fixed in order to leave a situation.”

Allen said domestic abuse can happen to anyone: women, men, children, and even pets.

The event will start with a keynote speaker, who is a survivor of domestic abuse. Mayor Marilyn Hatley and state Sen. Greg Hembree will also speak.

After the walk, participants will be able to enjoy music, a photo booth, 20 arts and crafts vendors, and food trucks. Girl Scouts will also have water and treats for pets. The event will also have information tables with advice and domestic violence resources.

The Woman’s Club has supported many survivors, and some have been inspired to become advocates for domestic violence awareness.

“We have seen some triumphs from tragedy,” Allen said. “We have people who’ve started their own foundations. We have a survivor this year who started her own foundation. So, to see them come out of their situation and thrive in life has been one of the greatest things to watch.”
