BOONE, N.C. (WFLA) — A North Carolina man who stumbled upon $20 lying on the ground of a parking lot, decided to use that bill to try his luck.

And what a decision that was.

Jerry Hicks, of Banner Elk, North Carolina, took that lucky find into a Speedway gas station and purchased an Extreme Cash scratch-off ticket.

“They actually didn’t have the ticket I was looking for so I bought that one instead,” Hicks told North Carolina Education Lottery.

The ticket ended up winning Hicks $1 million.

Hicks chose to receive his winnings as a lump-sum payment of $600,000. After the lottery headquarters pulled out the required state and federal tax withholdings, he left the office with $429,007.

When asked what the first thing he would be spending his winnings on, he gave an unusual but arguably realistic response.

“We are going to head straight to Golden Corral and eat everything they’ve got,” he told lottery officials.

According to Hicks, he plans on using the money not spent on Golden Corral to retire after working as a carpenter for 56 years and give some to his children as well.
