WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Williamsburg County School District (WCSD) will operate under a modified year-round calendar when students return for the 2024-25 school year.

The district announced Wednesday that it adopted the new calendar, which follows more than 60 school districts across the state and neighboring Georgetown County.

Students will still go to school for 180 days; however, the calendar change is meant to allow semesters and grading points to be equivalent, with 45 days for each grading period and 90 days for each semester, according to the district.

Instead of adding days to the traditional year, district officials say the new modified year-round calendar redistributes the 180 days and creates additional break periods throughout the year, like in October and February.

Students will have a fall intersession, winter break, spring break, and spring intersession. District leaders say students will also still receive a lengthy summer break. But instead of 10 weeks, it will be about eight weeks.

“A modified year-round calendar also provides important mental health and wellness benefits for students and staff by allowing the district to start mid-week at the beginning of the year, finish the first semester prior to Winter Break, finish the school year the week of Memorial Day and have week-long breaks at designated periods throughout the year,” the district said.

The first day of school for Williamsburg County students will be August 1, 2024, and the last day of school will be May 30, 2025.
