Georgetown County Host 2 Annual Waccamaw Senior Sports Classic

GEORGETOWN COUNTY S.C.(WCBD)–On Friday, hundreds of senior citizens from Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg County arrived at the Beck Recreation center ready to put their abilities to the test.

“I always enjoy coming and being a part of this because it lets us know we still got a little spark going on no matter how old you are, and it’s always fun,” said Alice Hyong, a senior participant.

The athletes participated in events like track, bean bag toss, and much more during the event. Anthuan Maybank said that, as an athlete, he loves seeing every generation stay active.

“It is the best experience I can imagine having because I was talking to them early about when I was younger. We did not have a senior population, this vibrating outgoing, and it amazes me to see each year. The population is growing, and they’re even more active,” said Anthuan Maybank, an Olympian Gold Medalist.

102-year-old Joanne Funey shocked everyone with a 60-yard football throw. News 2 asked her about the secret to staying fit, and she said.

“God above heavenly father .. and if I can do it, you can too,” said Funey.

One volunteer told me she believes events like these are a big part of what keeps seniors engaged,  happy, and healthy.

“It’s powerful to the community, I think because these are the seniors that then traveled and did so much different. Things came for all parts of the states that they can still run, jump, move, and have fun with each other’s activities. I think that’s the best for me,” said Vanessa Brown, A Volunteer for the senior sports event.

On Saturday, Anthuan Maybank will host an open community event at the Maybank track and field center beginning at 10 a.m.
