CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- The Medical University of South Carolina held their graduation ceremony today at the North Charleston Coliseum.

The coliseum was filled with hundreds of people there to watch the graduates get their degree.

“We’ve enjoyed the ones who have been with us for a year, up to 3 years, reaching these milestones in there,” MUSC Director of Student Services, Becca Barry said,

590 students graduated from MUSC’s six colleges; mental medicine, graduate studies, health professions, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.

Barry says it’s bittersweet to see them graduate, but also a proud moment, since these students work so hard.

“For the work they put in to just get into these programs, the year of education that they do before they even come to us. They’ve invested a lot of time, and through these programs, they have to give it their all,” Barry said.

Ted Brown was at the ceremony Saturday to watch his family member, Rose Delores Gibbs give the commencement speech.

Gibbs was the first black woman to graduate from MUSC’s School of Medicine.

“I am so excited, she’s been our doctor for a year, and so I’m so excited,” Brown said.

Barry says her hope is that every graduate continues to work hard, and also stays in touch.

“We want to follow them and be a part of their story and their future and cheer them on along the way. So go out there and make us proud,” Barry said.
