SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A total of 54 guns were found in carry-on luggage at TSA checkpoints across South Carolina’s airports during the first half of 2024.

That total is up from 42 guns found in the first half of 2023. Much of that increase is due to more firearms being detected at Charleston International Airport (CHS), according to data released by the Transportation Security Administration.

Fewer guns were found in the first half of 2024 at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GPS) than the prior year.

With its increase in passenger counts, GSP saw a 32% decrease in the rate of firearms found at TSA checkpoints.

Among South Carolina’s airports, Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) had the highest rate of firearms found, with more than two detected per 100,000 passengers so far in 2024, TSA data showed.

Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) saw the lowest rate of firearms found at checkpoints in 2024 among the state’s four largest commercial airports.

Statewide, one gun was detected found for every 70,113 passengers screened in South Carolina. That rate is much higher than the nationwide rate of one gun per 135,560 passengers screened.

Passengers found with a firearm in their luggage face a fine of up to $15,000 and potential criminal citations or arrest by local law enforcement, according to the TSA.

In addition, those found traveling with guns will also have their TSA PreCheck eligibility revoked for up to five years and will receive enhanced screening during future travel.

I forgot is no excuse. Leave your weapons at home or check them in an approved and locked gun case.
