DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A North Charleston Police officer was arrested Wednesday morning after being pulled over by state troopers in Dorchester County.

38-year-old Joseph Sherwood was charged with a DUI and open container. He was booked at the Dorchester County Detention Center.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Sherwood was pulled over on I-26 eastbound near the 177-mile marker at 1:03 a.m. for failure to maintain a lane, a minimum speed limit violation, and a defective taillight.

When the trooper approached the vehicle, he saw an open container and smelled alcohol emanating from Sherwood’s car. The North Charleston Police Department confirmed Sherwood is a lieutenant with the department.

Sherwood is currently on administrative leave with NCPD.
