UPDATE 8:24 PM: “Per SCDOT, I-26 east from Highway 27 (Exit 187) to the Volvo exit is now open for travel.”

UPDATE 4:38 PM: SCDOT said one eastbound lane is open on I-26 near Ridgeville. Crews are making repairs to the interstate near mile marker 189 as water recedes.

Both westbound lanes are open for travel.

“Delays are still anticipated, especially during peak travel hours. Drivers are urged to use caution as road workers are still actively working in this area. We will work as quickly as possible to reopen all travel lanes as soon as it is clear and safe to do so,” the department said.

Additional rainfall or flooding could cause the roadway to close again.

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Eastbound lanes of I-26 are shut down at mile marker 190 due to flooding on the interstate.

South Carolina Department of Transportation warned that water was on the roadway in both directions. “I-26 in both directions near MM 189 east of Cypress Campground overpass is currently flooded,” the agency said.

Law enforcement is working to move traffic out of the roadway.

Flooding closes multiple thoroughfares in Dorchester County

Trooper Nick Pye with the South Carolina Highway Patrol lanes at mile marker 190 are closed and that drivers should expect delays across the tri-county area as water continues to flow.

“Please don’t drive around barricades,” said Trooper Pye. “Remember standing water is deeper than it looks!”

Flash flooding is occurring in Berkeley and Dorchester counties after heavy rain fell overnight, which mixed with already high water associated with Tropical Storm Debby.
