DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Dorchester School District Two delayed its workday until noon on Friday because of heavy rain and flooding.

“We will reassess later this morning to determine the feasibility of our scheduled Elementary Meet the Teacher event and all extracurricular activities this afternoon/evening,” the district said.

Currently, a shelter is being operated at St. George Middle School at 600 Minus Street,

District officials said the county received significant rainfall overnight, causing flooding in many rural areas. It’s associated with Tropical Storm Debby.

All of Dorchester County Government offices are closed Friday because of the flooding including courts, libraries, convenience sites, and parks.

“Widespread flooding throughout upper Dorchester County. For your safety, stay home and off the roads unless it’s a life-threatening emergency. Do not risk your life, please stay indoors,” the county said.

People with non-emergency questions or concerns can call the Dorchester County Call Center at 843-832-0393. Call 9-1-1 if you have an emergency.

    FLOOD SAFETY TIPS:

    • Follow Evacuation Orders: Evacuate promptly when instructed by authorities; do not delay.
    • Avoid Floodwaters: Stay away from walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters; even shallow water can be hazardous.
    • Move to Higher Ground: If trapped, move to the highest level of your home; avoid attics unless you can escape through the roof.
    • Prevent Electrical Hazards: Avoid wet electrical equipment; turn off electricity at the main breaker if safe to do so.
