DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Nearly 40 people and six animals have been rescued in Dorchester County amid heavy flash flooding from continuous rain pelting the area.

County officials say most of the rescues have occurred in the county’s west end. Dorchester County Fire saved 19 people and six dogs during swift water rescues.

Dorchester County deputies saved an additional 19 people. The flash flooding stems from significant rainfall hitting the area as the last of Tropical Storm Debby lingers in the area.

All main thoroughfares west of Summerville are shut down. In all, over 100 roads are blocked off from traffic.

St. George Middle School has opened as a shelter for those seeking safety from the flood waters. People should bring bedding and comfort items, extra clothes, personal hygiene items, food, water, and childcare items.

County officials are urging residents to stay home. If you need more information, call 843-832-0393.

45 first responders from different agencies are assisting Dorchester County rescue teams.
