ST. GEORGE, S.C. (WCBD) – People living in the St. George community were impacted by flooding Friday as heavy rain fell overnight.

Much of Dorchester County was already dealing with flooding and high water after slow-moving Tropical Storm Debby moved along the South Carolina coast.

Many roads around the St. George community are closed because of water on the roadway and officials are asking people to stay home and not risk driving through flood waters.

Water rescue teams worked throughout the night and rescued multiple people from cars. No injuries have been reported.

One person News 2 heard from said flooding is not the only issue on roads. He believes the structural integrity of several roads has been compromised.

“There are quite a few in the community where they washed out thoroughly. Not just, you know, flooded with water but washed out,” said Patrick Grimsley, who lives in St. George. “Hopefully, we can get some of these roads fixed and back passable because, like right now, I don’t have a way to work. If I wanted to go to work, I couldn’t get to work right now.”

Dozens of roads – including most main thoroughfares west of Summerville – were closed because of flooding. St. George Middle School was opened as an emergency shelter.
