High Rip Current Risk as Hurricane Ernesto swell hits Lowcountry beaches

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Swimmers and surfers are urged to exercise caution as the Lowcountry experiences high waves and dangerous rip currents due to the arrival of Hurricane Ernesto’s swell.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Rip Current Risk for Southeast South Carolina and Georgia beaches, which remains in effect through this evening.

Rip currents, often described as “rivers of the sea,” can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, making them extremely dangerous. Even experienced swimmers can find themselves in life-threatening situations if caught in a rip current.

Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Grace Lowe said “Make sure you are being careful today.” If you want to take your board out, be aware that the surf will be at 3-5 feet.

If caught in a rip current, stay calm and avoid panicking. Swim parallel to the shoreline instead of heading directly back to shore. Once you’re out of the current, swim at an angle toward the shore. If you can’t swim out, tread water and signal for help.

Surfers and swimmers should be vigilant, avoiding areas where rip currents are likely to form and never entering the water alone. Beachgoers are advised to stay close to lifeguard stations and follow all posted warnings and flags.
