CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)– Charleston County School District kicked off the school year with a thank you to the teachers and staff that make it all possible throughout the year

Charleston County School District celebrated its teachers with the inaugural Back-to-School Bash at Credit One Stadium on Daniel Island, headlined by Lowcountry favorite Darius Rucker.

“It’s an excitement builder, it also brings people together. Teachers, even though they hear their name called 5000 times a day they rarely get to see other adult they don’t always get to be with each other so its a great time bond with faculty and students,” Barbara Hairfield, Charleston County School District faculty member.

“Really its our way of saying thank you to our employees, thank you for the excitement you bring into our classrooms and to think forward as we kick off the new year,” said Superintendant Anita Huggins.

News 2’s Octavia Mitchell served as the emcee for the event introducing student singers, dancers and bands before the final act of the night.

The event was made possible all through community sponsors who want to recognize everything teachers and staff do.

“This is on the house. And it’s pretty amazing that the community would come together to make this happen for our staff. We’re talking about six to ten thousand individuals its pretty amazing,” said Andy Pruitt, spokesperson for Charleston County Schools.

Superintendent Anita Huggins hoping the concert puts everyone in good spirits for the upcoming year

“You are loved, you are valued, we care about you and thank you for all you for kids and let’s go get them this year,” said Huggins.

Darius Rucker performed from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. and closed the show with Wagon Wheel.
