COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Three individuals were injured, including a 1-year-old, after a car flipped in Cottageville over the weekend, according to rescue teams.

Around 6:23 p.m., an SUV left the roadway in the 12000 block of Cottageville Highway and flipped three times, trapping the passengers inside, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue.

Officials believe that the driver of the car may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash. The SUV passenger attempted to steer the vehicle to safety but failed. First responders found the vehicle upright with passengers trapped inside.

Crews used rescue tools to free the occupants of the car, according to Colleton County Fire. The 1-year-old was secured in a car seat and received only minor injuries.

The two adult females received critical injuries and were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina’s Trauma Center. The minor was taken to MUSC’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
