    SLED investigating inmate death at Al Cannon Detention Center

    CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – State agents are investigating after a resident died in the Al Cannon Detention Center Infirmary.

    The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the infirmary after 7 a.m. Friday after receiving reports of an unresponsive inmate.

    When deputies arrived medical staff, North Charleston Fire personnel and EMS were performing life-saving measures. The inmate was taken to Roper St. Francis where they were pronounced dead.

    The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the inmate.

    The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is the lead investigating agency. The Office of Professional Standards will conduct an internal investigation per protocol.
