NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)–Officials from the North Charleston Police Department are discussing new measures to help crack down on the recent increase of fatal accidents on the city’s roadways. Especially as they prepare for a busy holiday weekend.

The North Charleston Police Department told News 2 that most crashes that happen are preventable. Still, many people involved are usually distracted by their phones or going above the speed limit.

Officers said the department has seen 22 fatal accidents in 2024 and six of those happened in just the last few weeks.

“We have had an unusual uptick in collisions over the last few weeks. That’s a lot of people. These were very nasty, high-speed collisions,” said Capt. Rick Keys with North Charleston PD.

NCPD said most accidents are caused by distracted drivers on their phones, driving above the speed limit, and making incomplete stops.

Charleston Moves is a nonprofit that advocates for safer streets. Executive director Katie Zimmerman said she’s seen distracted driving firsthand.

“I have motorists who will pass me very fast, very close to beat me to a red light, and then they’re sitting in front of me at the red light texting. It’s like, OK. I see why you were so close. You didn’t even know I was there, so a lot of distracted driving,” said Zimmerman.

Officials said Rivers Avenue, Ashely Phosphate Road, and Highway 78 are the main areas where most accidents happen. They’re increasing patrols before the holiday weekend and reminding the public to stay safe on the roadways.

“This year has been rough for us, and it’s gotten to the point where we had to ask for help. We are asking the public to please slow down and stop for the red stop signs. Don’t mess with your phone because those acts are deadly and happen much faster.”

NCPD said they’ll also have increased patrols for drunk drivers – they’re reminding you to drive sober or get pulled over.
