CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A Charleston County EMS unit was involved in a multi-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning on Savannah Highway.

Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the highway near Hughes Road around 6:30 a.m. after getting reports that a county vehicle was involved in a crash with injuries.

Officials with the sheriff’s office said the EMS unit was heading northbound on Savannah Highway when a car failed to yield the right of way while attempting to cross the highway from Hughes Road, and the EMS unit struck the side of the vehicle.

A third vehicle, a Mack tractor, was hit when the car and the EMS unit were coming to a stop, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials say the EMS unit was not carrying any patients at the time. Its lights and sirens were not being used.

The driver of that car was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina with life-threatening injuries; however, no other injuries were reported.

CCSO’s Traffic Unit is investigating the crash.
