Dominion Energy offers free upgrades to Charleston Housing Authority residents

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – More than 1,800 Dominion Energy customers living in the Housing Authority of the City of Charleston properties will soon receive free energy-saving products and services, all aimed at reducing energy consumption and lowering monthly bills.

This marks the first time the company has launched its Neighborhood Energy Efficiency Program (NEEP) within housing authority communities.

The NEEP program is designed to provide income-qualified customers with energy-saving education and home assessments. Participants in the program are eligible for free installations of low-cost, energy-saving measures, such as LED light bulbs, faucet aerators, HVAC filters, and weatherstripping for doors and windows.

“Dominion Energy is excited to offer this program on such a large scale,” said Derek McDaniel, program manager for Dominion Energy’s Neighborhood Energy Efficiency Program. “This marks the first time NEEP has worked with a housing authority in South Carolina. Our representatives have spent the past several weeks going door to door to help customers find ways to reduce the amount of electricity they use in their homes, which in return, will help them better manage their bill.”

Since June, the program has completed energy efficiency upgrades in hundreds of units across more than 20 properties in Charleston, including Cooper River Court, Meeting Street Manor, and Wraggborough Homes. The project is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks.

Art Milligan, CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of Charleston, expressed gratitude for the program. “Our residents will benefit immensely. These thoughtful modifications will greatly improve their quality of life and provide valuable energy education.”

Since NEEP’s launch in 2013, Dominion Energy customers across South Carolina have reduced their electricity usage by more than 1 billion kilowatt hours – enough energy to power around 92,000 homes for an entire year.
